University Lecture (Live-stream)

*TICKETING FOR THIS EVENT HAS NOW CLOSED.*

“I like to envision the whole world as a jigsaw puzzle…If you look at the whole picture, it is overwhelming and terrifying, but if you work on your little part of the jigsaw and know that people all over the world are working on their little bits, that’s what will give you hope.” – Dr Jane Goodall

How might we move from Hope to Action?

Dr Jane Goodall DBE has inspired generations of conservationists and enriched humankind’s understanding of animals, people and our shared environment. Today, there are Jane Goodall Institutes in 35 countries and Roots & Shoots (R&S) education programs in 100+ countries around the world to support her vision and legacy. In 2016, the Jane Goodall Institute Australia (JGIA) launched its R&S Australia National Youth Leadership Council (NYLC) to provide an opportunity for young Australians to pave the way for the next generation of conservationists.

Professor Lesley Head from the School of Geography will open the event, followed by Roots & Shoots National Youth Leadership Council Youth Leader, and University of Melbourne alumni, Asitha Samarawickrama.  The lecture will include presentations from the NYLC, a talk from Dr Goodall, and a Q&A Session facilitated by JGIA Chair, Paul Smith.

This event is open to students, staff and alumni of all Melbourne-based Universities and their guests.

Refreshments, including alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages, and canapes following the stream are catered by Lentil As Anything Thornbury, a not for profit vegetarian and vegan restaurant promoting multiculturalism, social justice, inclusion of long-term unemployed and marginalised individuals, in addition to encouraging people to be active citizens by getting involved in community based initiatives.

Upon purchasing your ticket, you will have the opportunity to suggest a question for Dr Goodall to answer on the night! If your question is selected, you will be notified ahead of the event. A digital program of the event will be sent to registered emails in advance of the date.

A digital program will be sent to all ticket-holders prior to the event in the spirit of sustainability.

‘Dr Jane Goodall DBE and the R&S Australia NYLC University Lecture, Hope to Action: Empowering Young People to Build a Sustainable Future’ is hosted by Macquarie University and the Centre for Environmental Law through the 2017 Distinguished Visiting Fellow Scheme.
